New Delhi: Argentine prodigy Faustino Oro has grabbed headlines after defeating Indian International Master Divya Deshmukh at the ongoing Tata Chess Masters.

At 10 years, eight months and 16 days Oro is the youngest IM in 2024 and was the youngest player to attain a norm for the IM title, a feat bettered by Roman Shogdzhiev in January 2025.

Now aged 11, Oro, dubbed the ‘Messi of Chess’ has captivated not only chess followers but fellow competitors too as world champion D Gukesh and R Praggnanandhaa halted their respective games to take note of him as he defeated 19-year Divya.

Oro first came into limelight when he beat five-time world champion and World No.1 Magnus Carlsen at a weekly Bullet Brawl tournament hosted by chess.com in May 2024.

In 2003, he was the youngest to achieve the feat of 2300 rating in the classical format but that mark has since been betterd by Ethan Pang in November 2024.

Divya is one of India’s top female chess players, having won three gold medals at the Olympiad, apart from multiple gold medals at Asian Championship, World Junior Championship and World Youth Championship.

She was a member of the India team that won the FIDE Online Chess Olympiad in 2020. Two years later, Divya won the women’s Indian Chess Championship and also also claimed an individual bronze at the Chess Olympiad.

Divya is placed at the second spot among female chess players of the country.
