From dressing room drama to riveting Pressers: What happens when managers publicly criticise their players?

New Delhi: Ruben Amorim, made waves when he stated that he would prefer to sit his 63-year-old goalkeeping instructor than Marcus Rashford due to what he saw as a lack of effort. Amorim claims that Rashford is not providing his “maximum” in training, which is why the England striker has been absent from the United matchday squad for six weeks. With European clubs reportedly interested in signing the 27-year-old before next week’s transfer deadline, his future at Old Trafford is now in doubt.

A manager’s connection with his players is frequently quite complicated. Managers rarely humiliate their players in public, regardless of what they may say in the dressing room. That is not to imply, however, that they are completely immune from criticism during interviews and news conferences, particularly when the technical guy faces termination. Managers may occasionally vent their frustrations in public due to pressure, but this rarely works out well because fans are left to choose between the players and their boss. Few of these players have previously been publicly criticized by their Premier League manager.

Ange Postecoglou criticised Timo Werner at Spurs

Timo Werner was substituted at halftime during a Europa League stalemate at Rangers in December, and Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou declared his performance “not acceptable.”

“We need everybody, including him, to be contributing because we don’t have the depth to leave people out if they perform poorly,” Postecoglou stated. “I expect a level of performance from some of the senior guys, and tonight wasn’t that.”

Since the Rangers match, Timo Werner, who was once the hottest German prodigy back when he was playing for RB Leipzig, has only made two starts and five substitute appearances. Postecoglou is still in charge of Tottenham, although he is under fire following a run of eight losses in ten Premier League games.

Erik Ten Hag sidelined Jadon Sancho from his plans

In September 2023, Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United at the time, benched Jadon Sancho for a game against Arsenal because he felt the England winger had not trained to the “level” necessary to be involved.

“A scapegoat for a long time” is how Sancho responded to the accusation. Before returning to his old team, Borussia Dortmund, on loan in January, he was compelled to practice away from the first squad. When Sancho came to United preseason training in the summer of 2024, Ten Hag had open discussions with him; nevertheless, on transfer deadline day, the former Manchester City youngster signed a season-long loan to Chelsea.

Jurgen Klopp took shots at Dejan Lovren

Following a genuinely dreadful performance against Tottenham, former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren was subjected to a scolding from manager Jurgen Klopp. Klopp was upset with Lovren for his delayed responses and for being a major contributor to several of the four goals, even though the entire team was completely out of sync at White Hart Lane.

It was fairly shocking because Klopp often strongly opposes the idea of publicly criticizing specific people, but he felt compelled to express his rage because he was so furious. Klopp immediately expressed regret to Lovren for his actions, and the two would go on to win the Champions League, defeating Tottenham in the final, to cap off the season.

The feud between Roberto Mancini and Carlos Tevez

Tevez and Roberto Mancini, had a major falling out during the 2011–12 campaign when both of them were at Manchester City. When City travelled to Munich to play Bayern in the Champions League, their rivalry reached a breaking point. Mancini tried to put Tevez into the game from his bench after the German powerhouses had taken a 2-0 lead, but the striker was upset that he had not been featured from the beginning and would not come onto the field.

The normally composed Italian was furious after the game, saying: “For me it’s a bad situation because it is impossible for a player to refuse to play and help the team. He was disappointed that he didn’t play but we play with 11 players. To do that is just impossible.”

Mancini then added: “He is finished for me. If I had my way he’d be out of the club.”

Jose Mourinho’s take on Luke Shaw

During his tenure as Manchester United’s manager, Jose Mourinho questioned the dedication and fitness of England defender Luke Shaw. In April 2017, Mourinho said the full-back utilized “his body with my brain” after substituted in late against Everton. Shaw only made 16 appearances for United this season when he came on as a substitute against the Toffees, and although some aspects of his performance impressed Mourinho, the Portuguese had a caution.

He continued: “He was in front of me and I was making every decision for him.”

Pep Guardiola criticising Joe Hart

With the success he has already had at Manchester City, Pep Guardiola has solidified his place as one of the best league managers ever. However, he made a mistake by firing championship-winning goalie Joe Hart, which angered fans. Willy Caballero and later Claudio Bravo took the place of the former England number one, who the Spaniard believed was his downfall due to his inability to perform as a sweeper-keeper.

Hart was unhappy with his demotion and moved on loan to Torino, but he was never able to return to the level of play that had made him one of the best goalkeepers in the world on Manchester.

Harry Redknapp on Adel Taraabt

Harry Redknapp, who was by then the manager of QPR, was unreserved in his criticism of Adel Taarabt when he was asked why the midfield player was left out of his squad for a match against Liverpool in October 2014,

“I can’t protect people who don’t want to run and train, and are about three stone overweight,” Redknapp stated.

“He played in a reserve game the other day and I could have run about more than he did. I can’t pick him.”

In response, Taarabt claimed Redknapp was offering justifications for the team’s subpar performance, given that the Hoops were at the bottom of the Premier League at the time.

When managers publicly criticize their players, it often sparks controversy, as seen in the ongoing feud between Manchester United boss Rúben Amorim and Marcus Rashford.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
