New Delhi: Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is considered to be a very auspicious pilgrimage among Hindus. However, very few people are able to undertake the yatra due to its tough terrain and also the cost, which is quite high as compared to other pilgrimages like Amarnath, Kedarnath or Badrinath.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra – the annual pilgrimage – is in news after India and China decided to resume the Yatra after the militaries of both the Asian giants completed disengagement of troops in eastern Ladakh.

The Ministry of External Affairs has categorically stated that the medical charges are non-refundable even if the applicant is not able to undertake the Yatra eventually due to disqualification on medical grounds or otherwise. The government will forfeit the non-refundable deposit if the applicants are found medically unfit.

  1. Devotees wishing to go on Kailash Mansarovar Yatra are required to deposit a non-refundable amount of Rs 5,000/-. Let’s see what is the total cost of the Yatra per Yatri as per the MEA:

Rs 32,000 Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam Limited (KMVN) Fees: It is mandatory for a yatri to deposit a non-refundable sum of Rs 5,000/- by bank demand draft payable in Delhi in favour of ‘Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam Limited’. The remaining Rs 27,000/- has to be paid on arrival in Delhi to begin the Yatra.
  3. A pilgrim has to pay Rs 2,400 for a Chinese visa .
  4. A devotee has to pay Rs 3,100 (in cash or by bank demand draft) to ‘Delhi Heart and Lung Institute’ for medical tests.
  5. If the medical authority recommends Stress Echo Test, then the yatri has to pay Rs 2,500 for the test.
  6. US $801 (Equivalent to approximately Rs 48,861 @ Rs. 61) is charged from every yatri. The money is paid to Chinese authorities in Tibet for lodging, meals at Taklakot, transportation, including charges for transporting baggage and hiring of horse/pony at Lipulekh Pass, entry tickets for Kailash, Manasarovar and Kejia Temple. It includes US $1 towards Immigration Fee.
  7. Rs 8,904 is charged by the Uttarakhand Government for Porter charges for both ways on India side.
    The Uttarakhand government also charges Rs 10,666 to provide Pony with Pony Handler on the Indian side. Yatris are required to decide on hiring ponies and porters at Dharchula itself. The ponies are required for the stretch from Narayan Ashram to Lipulekh Pass and back.
  8. RMB 360 (Rs.3,600 approx.) is charged for porter for both ways on the Chinese side (subject to revision by Tibetan authorities).
  9. RMB 1,050 (Rs.10,500 approximately): If yatris want to hire porters and ponies For the Kailash Parikrama in Tibet, they will have to decide at Taklakot itself. The price is subject to revision by Tibetan authorities.
  10. Rs 2,000 is charged as contribution to Pool Money for group activities.
  11. Other expenses (Roughly estimated at Rs 20,000) are charged for expenditure on cooks in Tibet, clothing, food stores and other items required for the Yatra.

The Ministry of External affairs categorically mentions that Yatris should carry adequate funds for the Yatra and for unforeseen conditions.
