New Delhi: The growing market for plant-based foods and beverages is being driven by consumer demand for healthier, more ethical, and sustainable options. One of the most compelling examples of this shift is the remarkable rise of plant-based milk. Once a niche product, they’ve become a staple for many. Dr. Zeeshan Ali is the Research Program Specialist with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), while talking about plant-based sources of milk, and its effect on health.

Their rise in popularity has inspired discussions about their nutritional value and their role as sustainable alternatives to traditional dairy, which has been linked to health concerns such as lactose intolerance, heart disease, certain cancers, digestive problems, and type 1 diabetes. A recent study by the University of Copenhagen wrongly suggested that plant-based milk fall short of cow’s milk in terms of protein content and can lose nutrients during processing.

While all plant milks are not created equal, they all provide essential nutrients and are a healthier option than cow’s milk. Soy milk is comparable in protein content to cow’s milk and has the added benefit of isoflavones; hemp milk is especially rich in omega-3 fatty acids; and oat milk, like other plant milk, provides fiber and complex carbohydrates.
Plant-based milks are also often fortified with essential nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, and vitamin B12. With careful consideration and a balanced diet that includes other plant-based protein sources like lentils, beans, and nuts, a plant-based diet is complete nutrition.

Concerns about nutrient loss during ultra-high temperature (UHT) processing, as noted in the study, are not unique to plant-based milk. UHT is a common method used across food industries to extend shelf life while maintaining safety. Moreover, advancements in technology continue to minimize these losses.

Choosing the right plant-based milk is a personal journey. Experiment, explore the different flavors and textures, and find what suits your taste and dietary needs. Whether you’re drawn to the creamy richness of oat milk, the nutty flavor of almond milk, or the protein punch of soy milk, the world of plant-based milk offers endless possibilities.
The Indian market, in particular, is experiencing a significant shift toward plant-based alternatives. It’s a reflection of our evolving values and a testament to our growing awareness of the interconnectedness of our food choices with our health, the environment, and the well-being of all living beings. As consumers, we have the power to make informed decisions that support our health and a more sustainable and compassionate food system.

Dairy-based milk has vitamin D, calcium, healthy fat and proteins. Soy milk, too, is incredibly healthy. Read on to know which one is a better choice.  Health Conditions Health News: Latest News from Health Care, Mental Health, Weight Loss, Disease, Nutrition, Healthcare
