New Delhi: Indian hurdler Tejas Shirse continued to impress with stellar performances, breaking his own national record in men’s 60m hurdles for the second time this year. He finished in second position at the Elite Indoor Track Meeting in Miramas, France.
Shirse clocked 7.64 seconds to win a silver medal at the World Athletics Indoor Tour event on Friday. He improved his earlier national record time of 7.65 seconds, set at the CMCM Indoor Meeting in Luxembourg on January 19.
He started the event brilliantly and finished third in the first heat. He booked his place in the final with a timing of 7.70 seconds. He improved his timings in the final and secured a silver medal. Spain’s Enrique Llopis clinched the gold medal with a sensational timing of 7.54 seconds, while France’s Wilhem Belocian won the bronze medal with a timing of 7.67s.
This was his third race of the season. But his timing is still short of the qualifying mark of 7.57 seconds for the World Indoor Championships, which will be held in Nanjing, China in March 2025. The 22-year-old Shirse is also the national record holder in 110m hurdles with a timing of 13.41 seconds.
Jyothi Yarraji finished fifth in the women 60m hurdles
Reigning Asian champion Jyothi Yarraji missed out on the podium finish after securing fifth position in the women’s 60m hurdles in the same meet with a time of 8.10s. She fell short of her national record by 0.06 seconds, which was set by her last week.
She started slow in the competition and clocked 8.20 seconds in the heats but it was enough to book a spot in the final. She improved her performance in the final by clocking a time of 8.10 seconds. But she finished fifth and it wasn’t enough to secure a podium finish for Yarraji.
The 25-year-old won a gold medal in the 60m hurdles in her first race of the season with a national record time of 8.04 seconds on January 25 at the Elite Indoor Meeting in Nantes, France.
