New Delhi: In one of the biggest upsets of the ongoing 38th National Games in Uttarakhand, a 15-year-old shooter named Jonathan Anthony became the youngest gold medallist in the history of the men’s 10m air pistol. The Karnataka prodigious player displayed an outstanding gameplan to finish above the likes of Paris Olympic gold medallist Sarabjot Singh and Asian Games medallist Saurabh Chaudhary.

Jonathan shot a total of 240.7 from 22 attempts. In the first stage, where all the eight finalists take 10 shots each, the youngster didn’t had a great start to the finals, scoring 99.1 to finish fifth. Gurpreet Singh from Haryana was on the top of the leaderboard with 102.2 followed by Aditya Makra (Haryana) – 101, Ravinder Singh (Services) – 100.8, and Sarabjot Singh (Haryana) – 100. Saurabh Chaudhary didn’t even make it to the final as he finished ninth in the qualification round.

The Karnataka shooter staged a remarkable comeback with targets of 10.9, 10, 9.9, 10.1, 10.5, 10.3, 10.6, 10.1, 10.4, 10.2, 10.2, 9.4, 9.1 & 9.0 in the elimination round to seal the gold medal in the competition. His consistency couple with accuracy was commendable, indicating the clarity of thought at this age.

“I’m thrilled with this win. Competing against such talented shooters who have represented India at the highest level makes this victory even more meaningful. Today was my day, and I’m proud of how it all came together,” Anthony was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

Services duo of Ravinder (240.3) and Gurpreet (220.1) claimed the silver and bronze medals in the men’s 10m air pistol event. Meanwhile, Sarabjot, who achieved a bronze medal in the mixed team 10m air pistol event with Manu Bhaker in the Paris Olympics last year, finished fourth with a below-par score of 198.4.

 

 Fifteen-year-old Jonathan Anthony created history at the 38th National Games, becoming the youngest-ever gold medalist in the men’s 10m air pistol event.
