Jorginho set to join Flamengo after Arsenal contract expires next season – Reports

New Delhi: Jorginho is set to leave Arsenal when his contract expires at the end of the season, with reports claiming the Italian midfielder has agreed a pre-contract deal with Flamengo. The 33-year-old joined Arsenal from Chelsea in 2023 for £12m and has made 72 appearances for the Gunners. While he was a key figure in Chelsea’s Champions League-winning squad, his role at Arsenal has mostly been as a squad player.

Last season, Jorginho played 36 games as Arsenal challenged for the Premier League title, but this term, he has started only six league matches. With Mikel Arteta relying more on Declan Rice, Thomas Partey, and Mikel Merino, Jorginho’s time at the club is coming to an end. Instead of extending his deal, Arsenal have chosen to refresh their midfield, with Martin Zubimendi expected to join in the summer.

Flamengo move on the cards for Jorginho

Reports suggest Jorginho has now signed a pre-contract with Flamengo, ensuring he will join the Brazilian side in the summer. Arsenal blocked his exit in January despite interest from Flamengo, as Arteta wanted to keep his squad depth intact while fighting for the Premier League title. Jorginho had expressed interest in playing in Brazil earlier this year, calling it an “incredible experience” he would love to have.

Jorginho’s experience and leadership have been valuable to Arsenal, but he has struggled for consistent game time this season. With his contract ending, Arsenal see this as the right time to part ways. Flamengo, preparing for the 2025 Club World Cup, see Jorginho as a key signing for their midfield.

Jorginho was left on the bench in Arsenal’s 5-1 win over Manchester City at the weekend, and it now looks certain that he will end his two-year spell in England when the season concludes.
