Mythological story behind Bhishma Ashtami

Bhishma Pitamah, a legendary warrior of the Mahabharata, was the son of Maharaja Shantanu and the river goddess Ganga. His birth name was Devvrat. From a young age, Devvrat displayed exceptional strength and prowess in battle, inheriting his father’s might and determination.

His dedication and perseverance earned him the title of Pitamah, symbolising his wisdom and revered position in the Kuru dynasty. His heroic deeds and unwavering commitment to dharma made him one of the most revered figures in Hindu mythology.

He is a key figure in the Mahabharata and was known for his devotion, strength, and wisdom. He vowed celibacy and dedicated his life to dharma. Despite his love for the Pandavas, he fought for the Kauravas in the Kurukshetra War. Severely wounded by Arjuna’s arrows, he awaited the Uttarayan period to end his life. He chose Magh Shukla Ashtami to leave his mortal form, marking a deep connection between his life and this sacred day.

Bhishma’s Ichha Mrityu boon allowed him to choose his time of death. In Hindu belief, the Sun’s southward movement for half the year is considered inauspicious, while Uttarayan, the Sun’s northward shift, marks an auspicious time. Bhishma Pitamah chose Magh Shukla Ashtami, after Uttarayan, to relinquish his life.

On this day, people perform Ekodishta Shraddha for Bhishma’s soul and offer tarpan for their ancestors’ salvation.

Bhishma Ashtami significance

Bhishma Ashtami honours the death anniversary of Bhishma Pitamah, the noble hero of the Mahabharata. This day is of great importance for Hindus. On this occasion, many devotees perform Ekodishta Shraddha in memory of Bhishma Pitamah, which is considered a tribute that anyone can offer, even if their father is alive.

Ekodishta Shraddha is a purification ritual, traditionally observed by those who have no father. In contrast, the tarpan (ritual offering) for Bhishma is widely observed, with people across various regions participating in it.

For those seeking children or desiring to overcome putra dosh, fasting on this day is considered highly auspicious. Devotees believe that by fasting and observing rituals on Bhishma Ashtami, they can receive the divine grace of Bhishma Pitamah, ensuring their desires for a prosperous, fulfilling life are fulfilled.

This day also serves as a reminder of his unwavering commitment to dharma and his selfless sacrifices for the greater good.

Bhishma Ashtami rituals

Devotees wake up early and take a sacred bath in a river or pond. They observe a fast and perform the tarpan by offering sesame seeds, water, and kusha (sacred grass) in honour of Bhishma Pitamah.

Many astrologers recommend performing Pitru Dosha puja on this day. Bathing in holy rivers on this day is considered highly auspicious. Additionally, devotees offer sesame seeds and boiled rice into the sacred river to honour Bhishma and seek blessings. Observing this day with prayer is believed to eliminate sins.
