New Delhi: India’s men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost against Malaysia’s Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun in the quarterfinals of the Indonesia Open Super 1000 tournament in Jakarta on Friday, June 6.
The former world No. 1 Indian pair went down 19-21, 16-21 in a 43-minute encounter against the Malaysian pair, who won their first match against the Indians in five meetings. Satwik-Chirag struggled with their serve and return against Man and Wee. The Indian duo also lacked discipline in defence and were often put in an uncomfortable position by the Malaysian pair.
Satwik made a few errors, which helped the Malaysian duo to lead by 9-7, and they went into the mid-game interval leading 11-9. Satwik Chirag levelled at 11-all with a few aggressive exchanges, but the Malaysians restored their lead to 15-12. The Indians made a strong comeback and clawed back to 17-17. A brilliant return from the Malaysians took the score to 19-17, but Satwik’s error handed the game point to the Malaysians, which they converted.
In the second game, the Indians struggled after switching sides and trailed 3-7 early. The Malaysian duo used a flat trajectory and drift to their advantage and took the game to 15-9. Satwik-Chirag showed late resistance and made a comeback in the match, but the Malaysian duo sealed the match with stunning gameplay to enter the semifinals of the Indonesia Open.
India’s challenge ends in Indonesia Open
PV Sindhu’s campaign came to an end after a close 22-20, 10-21, 18-21 loss to Thailand’s world No. 8 Pornpawee Chochuwong in a gruelling 78-minute match, while Lakshya Sen fell short against world No. 2 Shi Yu Qi in the opening round of the tournament.
Veteran shuttler HS Prannoy also suffered a first-round exit, going down 17-21, 18-21 to Indonesia’s emerging star Alwi Farhan in a close match. Malvika Bansod was forced to retire despite leading her match after she slipped on the court and injured her knee. Anupama Upadhyaya and Rakshitha Ramraj also bowed out, losing in straight games to Kim Ga Eun and Supanida Katethong, respectively, in the opening round.
