New Delhi: Formula One’s first Chinese driver, Zhou Guanyu, has decided to re-join Ferrari as one of its reserves drivers for the upcoming season. Zhou, who was a Ferrari academy driver earlier in his formula one career, will step in to fill the spot if Lewis Hamilton or Charles Leclerc are unable to race in the 2025 season. Zhou was associated as academy driver with Ferrari for four years between 2015 and 2018.

After having left Sauber at the end of last season, Zhou does not have a race seat for the upcoming season and hence has decided to join his old team. The 25-year-old driver first raced in formula one back in 2022 for the then Alfa Romeo team before it reverted back to the Sauber name. Zhou has a record of best finish of eighth with a very strong commercial and sponsorship backing in China.

Ferrari welcomes Zhou and Antonio Giovinazzi

Along with Zhou, another ex-Sauber driver, Antonio Giovinazzi, has rejoined Ferrari as another reserve driver. Giovinazzi last raced in formula one back in 2021 and features as a long time reserve who has yet to drive for the team. So, the team has two reserves drives apart from Hamilton and Leclerc being the regular ones. Meanwhile, Ferrari took to social media handle to welcome both Zhou and Giovinazzi in the side.

Last year at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, when Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jr was unable to race because of a serious illness, the team instead went in for then-Formula 2 driver Oliver Bearman. Bearman utilised the opportunity received to the fullest with a strong seventh-place finish, helping him build the momentum and eventually securing a full-time formula one drive for the upcoming season with Haas team.
