New Delhi: Indian Railways works tirelessly to improve the rail connectivity in the country for better and more seamless travel experience of common people. This facet of the Railways came to the fore once again after the announcement of the Union Budget on February 1, 2025. Indian Railways is going to manufacture 200 Vande Bharat, 100 Amrit Bharat and 50 Namo Bharat trains in the next two to three years to improve connectivity across the country.

The plans to improve rail connectivity in India

Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed that there are plans to create 17,500 Non-AC General and Sleeper Coaches. The move will benefit the low-income passengers immensely and ease the growing pressure on country’s railway infrastructure. As per Vaishnaw, the Railways would maintain for non-AC coaches a ratio of 2:3 and for AC coaches a ratio of 1:3.

New projects to improve Indian Railways

The Union Budget 2025 highlighted the continued focus of the government to upgrade Indian Railways and hence Rs 2.52 lakh crore has been allocated to this end. Vaishnaw also revealed new projects of the Railways worth Rs 4.6 lakh crore to be completed in the next four to five years, including redevelopments of stations, laying of new railway lines, the construction of flyovers and underpasses. The manufacturing process of the general coaches is already underway and by March 31, it is expected that 1,400 coaches will be completed. In FY 2025-26, the manufacturing of 2,000 new general coaches has been targeted. Moreover, 1,000 new flyovers will be constructed in India.

Total electrification of Indian Railways

Vaishnaw also announced that by the end of this financial year, Indian Railways will achieve 100 per cent electrification. Also, the government has increased allocation for rail safety to Rs 1.14 lakh crore from Rs 1.08 lakh crore, and in the next financial year a further increase to Rs 1.16 lakh crore. Also, by March 31, Railways will achieve a cargo-carrying capacity of 1.6 billion tonnes. It will make Indian Railways world’s second-largest cargo-carrying railway system after China.
