New Delhi: The Munich Air Disaster in 1958 made February 6 the most memorable and heartbreaking day in Manchester United’s history. After 67 years, the Busby Babes’ legacy is still very much alive and well, cherished by the team they helped create, their fellow athletes, and the fan base they influenced. When the tragedy occurred, United was on the verge of European fame after winning the first two First Division titles and defeating Red Star Belgrade in the European Cup quarterfinals.

Eight United players, including Duncan Edwards, who many who watched him play believe to be the best player in English football history, were among the 23 passengers who perished in the crash. They were called “the greatest side” by Sir Matt Busby, who survived the plane accident, even before his club won the European Cup ten years later.

According to Sir Alex Ferguson, “the origins of this football club as it is today goes down to that time.” They will always be remembered and will never be forgotten. Shedding light on this particular topic, other top clubs showed their respect and remembered these heroes of the beautiful game. A day where the rivary is kept aside and there is nothing but respect between Manchester United club and their fiercest of rivals on the pitch.

Liverpool pause for rememberance

Two of the biggest clubs in the history of English football have been rivals for quite some time now. Whether it comes to trophy count or number of top flight wins, these two have always had quite a rivalry. However, on the 67th anniversary of one of the most tragic event in the history of sport, The Reds showed their respect and remembered the heroes who lost their lives due to this turn of event. Over the years, the two sides have entertained the set of fans with some of the classic games in English top flight football and remembering this turn of event only shows how much these clubs respect each other.

Red Star Belgrade remember!

The same side who were defeated by the legendary Busby Babes back in 1958 right before the disaster took place, remembered the tragic event on social media. This is what the post stated: “We remember and honor the lives lost in the Munich Air Disaster. Forever in our hearts. Flowers of Manchester are immortal.”

Rivals not enemies! Something that both set of fans of the two Manchester clubs understand quite well and it was a beautiful gesture by Manchester United’s city rivals, Manchester City, who expressed their deepest thoughts and showed their respects on 67th anniversary of the Munich air disaster with the hashtag of ACityUnited, that means they stand with their neighbours. It is truly a beautiful gesture, yet again showing that even the main rivals stand together during the darkest of days.

The Gunners’ thoughts and prayers

Another one of Manchester United’s biggest English rivals, Arsenal plaid their tribute but posting:  “Today we’re thinking of Manchester United and all those affected by the Munich air disaster.”

The Gunners further added “Sixty-seven years. Never forgotten,” further letting the fans know that they remember the tragic event. Despite being one of United’s biggest rivals, the London side displayed great lass by remembering the legends of the game.

England national team’s tribute

English national side showed their tributes by posting a thoughtfull post on X(Twitter), that stated “Today and every day we remember all those who lost their lives, including the five England internationals, in the Munich air disaster on this day in 1958.”

Laliga side Sevilla expressing their thoughts

Sevilla expressed their thoughts on X, with a post that read “As always, our thoughts today are with our friends at Manchester United and those affected by the Munich Air Disaster. The Busby Babes will live on forever.”

Barnsley remember Tommy Taylor and Mark Jones

League one side Barnsley also posted on Twitter, where they paid tributes to their legendary players, Tommy Taylor who played for them from 1949-1953 before making his move to Manchester United and Mark Jones, who was born in Barnsley, later signing for Manchester United back in 1948. The club posted on twitter paying their respects to these two players and all the Busby Babes on the 67th anniversary of Munich air disaster.
