Adan Demirspo: Club president Bedirhan Durak resigns after team walks off against Galatasaray

New Delhi: Adan Demirspor’s club president has stepped down following his team’s abandonment of the Turkish Super Lig game against Galatasaray on Sunday. Adana players had decided to walk off the field, which was a decision taken by Bedirhan Durak, the club chief in the 32nd minute of the game after a penalty was awarded in the 12th minute of the game to Galatasaray and new signing Alvaro Morata scored.

In his departing statement, Durak stated that he was stepping down out of his concern for his “club, family, loved ones and health” hoping that it would take the club towards the right direction. Durak mentioned that he had seldom given an ear to criticisms or praises that came his way on social media.

The penalty in question happened when Dries Mertens was judged for fouling Semih Guler by referee Oguzhan Cakir and wasn’t overturned by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). The president had ordered them to walk out of the pitch, which was passed to Adana head coach Mustafa Alper Avci and the players and the game was ultimately abandoned in the 32nd minute of the game.

These incidents have been repeated in Turkish over the past few years. MKE Ankaragucu president was arrested and permanently banned by TFF, the country’s football federation for hitting referee Halil Umut Meler in the face. The incident happened during the clash between his side and Caykur Rizespor in the Super Lig.

In March last year, Fenerbahce had threatened to pull out from Turkish Super Lig after they felt they had been treated unfairly by the authorities. This was following an incident where chaos had erupted following a game against Trabzonspor as fans invaded the field and physically approached the club’s players.

In November 2024, Jose Mourinho, currently in charge of Fenerbahce was banned for one game for reaction following his side’s win against Trabzonspor. Mourinho had said that his side managed to win against “VAR and the system” and even blamed Atilla Karaoglan. Fenerbahce
