New Delhi: Birds paint the sky with their colours, fill the air with their sweet songs and delight us with their angelic beauty. Birds maintain the balance in nature and enhance the biodiversity of this planet. We love to watch them fly, and marvel as they sit with the sunrays gleaming on their feathers. There are many famous places in the world to watch birds, but few can be compared with the Bird Paradise, which is the largest bird park in Asia.

Bird Paradise: A heaven filled with the sweet sound of birds

Bird Paradise, an aviary located in Singapore’s Mandai is the largest bird park in Asia. It replaced the previous Jurong Bird Park and is a part of the Mandai Wildlife Reserve. The total area of the Bird Paradise is around 42 acres, and it is much bigger than the previous Jurong Bird Park.

The establishment of the Bird Paradise

In 2016, it was announced that Jurong Bird Park would be closed. The there existing wildlife parks in Singapore was integrated with the Rainforest Wild Park, and the Mandai Wildlife Reserve was formed. In 2021, the name Bird Paradise was announced. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the inauguration of the park was slightly delayed and Bird Paradise officially opened to the general public on May 8, 2023.

Some attractions of the Bird Paradise

Penguin Cove

Penguin Cove is one of the largest simulated Antarctic exhibits in the world. It has cold saltwater pools for penguins and the conditions produced is similar to that of the South Pole. One can find king, humboldt, northern rockhopper penguins, and gentoo penguins there.

Winged Sanctuary

There are more than 20 species of hornbills and other endangered tropical birds like the Palawan peacock-pheasant, Bali myna, and the Philippine eagle in this sanctuary. It has tall and densely-planted steel-mesh screen aviaries. Popular species found there include Abyssinian ground-hornbill, African pygmy falcon, and Bare-faced curassow.

Australian Outback

It has recreated Australia’s semi-arid environment and also the semi-tropical portions of Northeastern Australia and Papua New Guinea. It mostly has eucalyptus and ficus trees, and has Bennett’s wallabies there. Some of the notable bird species found there are Australian king parrot, Bluebonnet, Australian ringneck, Crimson rosella, and Galah cockatoo.

Mysterious Papua

This place has recreated Papua New Guinea’s coastal, tropical forests. Among the notable bird species found there are Black lory, Blue-winged kookaburra, Citron-crested cockatoo, Blue-eyed cockatoo, and Metallic pigeon.

Amazonian Jewels

Amazonian Jewels has replicated the rainforests of Central and South America and the Caribbean. Among the many birds found there include Andean cock-of-the-rock, Bare-faced curassow, Blue-winged macaw, Green jay, Golden-collared macaw, Moriche oriole, and Red-shouldered macaw.

Nyungwe Forest-Heart of Africa

It is the largest aviary in the Bird Paradise and Rwanda’s dense Nyungwe Forest inspired its creation. It has various suspension bridges and elevated walkways. Some notable species of birds found there are Black-casqued hornbill, Von der Decken’s hornbill, Western long-tailed hornbill, Congo pied hornbill, Trumpeter hornbill, Shoebill stork, and Greater flamingo.
