New Delhi: Mumbai Indians have named Afghanistan spin bowler Mujeeb Ur Rahman as the injury replacement for Allah Ghazanfar to their squad for IPL 2025. The off-spinner, who has played 49 T20 Internationals for the national team, has been signed for a deal of INR 2 crore by the five-time IPL champions.

Ghazanfar was sold to Mumbai Indians for INR 4.80 crore during the IPL mega auction held last year in November in Saudi Arabia. The 18-year-old off-spinner has suffered a fracture in the L4 vertebra, particularly in the left pars interarticularis, during Afghanistan’s tour of Zimbabwe. He also won’t be available for Afghanistan in the upcoming Champions Trophy as well.

“Mumbai Indians wish Ghazanfar a speedy recovery and a warm welcome to Mujeeb into the #OneFamily,” MI said in a statement.

Mujeeb’s IPL Career in a nutshell

Mujeeb has played 19 matches in the IPL across four seasons with his last appearance coming for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in IPL 2021. Although Mujeeb was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024, an injury forced him to pull out of the tournament. He has claimed 19 wickets in as many games at an average of 31.16 and an economy rate of 8.18.

He started his IPL journey with Punjab Kings in 2018, making his debut at the age of 17 years and 11 days, making him one of the youngest stars to feature in the cash-rich league. He stayed with the Punjab outfit for three seasons before his move to SRH in 2021.

One of the most vivid memories of a young Mujeeb in his early IPL days was outfoxing then Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain Virat Kohli in front of the electrifying crowd at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. It was that googly released from Mujeeb’s back of the hand to bamboozle Kohli’s stumps, sending him packing for 21.
