New Delhi: The second leg of the 5th edition of the Khelo India Winter Games has been postponed due to insufficient snowfall in Gulmarg, Jammu & Kashmir. The Jammu & Kashmir Sports Council announced on Monday that the competition which was scheduled to get underway on February 22 will now be staged at a later date after the snow condition improves and a new assessment is conducted.
Gulmarg was supposed to host ice events, including alpine skiing, nordic skiing, ski mountaineering, and snowboarding. However, inadequate snowfall in the region this year has led to the postponement of the Khelo India Winter Games 2025. The first leg of the tournament was held in Leh from January 23 to 27 where there were multiple events, including ice hockey and ice skating.
“The 5th edition of the Khelo India Winter Games, initially set for February 22-25, 2025, has been postponed due to insufficient snowfall. A new assessment will be conducted once snow conditions improve, and the revised update will be announced accordingly,” the J&K Sports Council wrote in a post on X.
The first leg of the Khelo India Winter Games 2025 saw hosts Ladakh finish on top of the standings with seven medals, including 4 gold. Tamil Nadu finished in the second spot with a total of five medals, including 3 gold. Despite bagging the most number of medals – 10, Maharashtra finished third on the medals table in the first leg as they managed only two gold medals.
Khelo India Winter Games 2025 in two phases
The Khelo India Winter Games 2025 is being conducted in two phases. The first phase was held in Leh from January 23 to 27 and the second phase was set to take place in Gulmarg from February 22 to 2025. Over 400 athletes from across the nation will be representing 19 states, Union Territories and other institutions across multiple disciplines in six winter sports.
Ladhak will be looking to continue their phenomenal run in the Khelo India Winter Games 2025 when the second leg of the competition resumes after adequate snowfall in Gulmarg. Meanwhile, other teams will also be hoping to make an impression.
