New Delhi: Novak Djokovic confirmed that Andy Murray will continue to coach him through to the French Open and possibly at Wimbledon. The Serbian suffered a setback after a 7-6(4), 6-2 defeat against Matteo Berrettini at the Qatar Open in Doha.
He confirmed that Murray has agreed to continue their partnership, which started in the buildup to last month’s Australian Open. The 24-time grand slam champion said that the collaboration was “indefinite”, opening the possibility of the former rivals partnering at Wimbledon this summer.
Djokovic’s Australian Open campaign ended when he had to retire in the semi-final against Alexander Zverev with a hamstring injury. After that, the Serbian tennis star said that he and Murray would “cool off” before deciding whether to continue together.
“We had a chat the day after I finished [the Australian Open] – we reflected on the period we spent together. We agreed he was going to take some time and think, speak with his family members, and see if he decides to keep working” Djokovic said upon arriving in Doha.
The Serb said that he expressed his desire to continue the collaboration with Murray and so he’s really glad that he did accept. The 37-year-old further added that it is indefinite in terms of how long they are going to work together, but they agreed most likely in the States and some clay-court tournaments.
“It was unfortunate the way the Australian Open finished but we had a great run”: Novak Djokovic
Djokovic said in the press conference that Murray has a unique perspective on his game and he has played against him and all of the current best in the world. He further added that Murray knows what they need to do tactically and what needs to be improved.
“He has a positive approach and has handled the whole pressure very well, as it is a completely different situation from being there as a player. He has been terrific with all the other team members, and while it was unfortunate the way the Australian Open finished with injury, we had a great run” Djokovic added.
