Dehradun: A week after the end of the National Games 2025, the state government has expedited the process to formulate a policy under the legacy scheme to ensure better use of the sports infrastructure in the state.
Various sports committees are now busy in mapping the sports resources available in the state to make use of them. Since Uttarakhand hosted the National Games 2025, the Uttarakhand government has developed proper sports infrastructure in the state’s different parts.
Creation of an environment for sports in all districts
As per the plan, an environment for sports will be created in all the districts under the decentralization system for proper utilization of the sports resources and players. The sports department aims to develop the sports ecosystem with the help of sports infrastructure facilities and sports resources.
Apart from the 35 different sports included in National Games, a Legacy scheme will be created for sports like Karate, Sepak Takraw, Jujutsu, Pencak Silat, and Golf. The sports and the Youth Welfare Department are jointly making their efforts for this. Sports committees for these sports will be constituted.
Map out which sports environment needs to be created in different districts
These committees will accommodate coaches, senior players, and persons associated with the sports. These committees will make assessments about availability of the sports resources, players, and coaches in all the districts. The committee will map out which sports environment needs to be created in different districts. The legacy scheme will be made based on the reports to be prepared by these committees. The committees will suggest the locations for sending sports equipment and coaches.
Requirement of the legacy scheme
The legacy scheme aims to ensure proper use of the sports resources used in the National Games held in Uttarakhand. There are chances of the waste of the resources due to lack of use. Legacy plan also aims to develop a sports eco system in the hill state. The sports department is also exploring possibilities to develop 16 sports academies in the state’s various districts.
Following the end of National Games 2025, the state government faces a challenge to avoid the chances of waste of the sports resources due to lack of use. The government wants to formulate a legacy policy to ensure better use of the sports infrastructures in the state in future.
