New Delhi: Harry Kane’s has finally won his first title of professional football career after helping Bayern Munich become Bundesliga champions following Freiburg 2-2 draw with second-placed Bayer Leverkusen.
It left Bayern with an unassailable lead of eight points over defending champions Bayern with rounds of matches left to be played.
Bayern’s 34th German league title was Kane’s first after runner-up finishes and individual top-scoring awards with English Premier League side Tottenham and the England national team.
Kane’s barren trophy cupboard has often sparked talks of a ‘curse’ on one of the world’s foremost strikers. He seemed set to celebrate on Saturday when Bayern were on course for a 3-2 win against RB Leipzig but a later equaliser scuttled his plans.
His team-mate Thomas Muller wrote on Instagram, “Next week, Harry!”. But as it turned out he didn’t have to wait that long as a day after Bayer stumbled.
While it was Kane’s first Bundesliga title, it was a record-extending 13th one for Muller and last for Bayern as he leaves his boyhood club after 25 years since joing as a 10-year-old kid.
In the 2024-25 season, Muller amassed goal involvements in 28 appearances. The 35-year-old is the most decorated player in the history of Bundesliga, ahead of team-mate Manuel Neuer (12 titles) and former colleagues David Alaba and Robert Lewandowski (both 10).
On Sunday, Maximilian Eggestein had put hosts Eggestein ahead and an own-goal from Piero Hincapie had put them in control. Bayer reduced the margin in the 82nd minute through Florian Wirtz after which Jonathan Tah equalised in stoppage time.
It made no change to the team standings as Bayer are already secured of a runners-up finish but it ensured the battle for the remaining two Champions League spots heated up with Freiburg’s keeping hold of their fourth position, a point ahead of Borussia Dortmund two ahead of Leipzig.
