New Delhi: Haryana dominated the 23rd National Paralympic Athletics Championship with a staggering total number of 106 medals, including the elusive 49 gold medals. On Thursday, they were crowned as the overall champions of the event with a sensational performance from their athletes in Chennai.
Additionally, they also bagged 32 and 25 silver and bronze medals respectively, topping the overall medals tally amongst many other contenders. Hosts Tamil Nadu finished on the second position with 17 gold medals, 18 silver and 12 bronze medals while Uttar Pradesh held on to the third position with 14 gold medals, 17 silver and 11 bronze medals. Rajasthan and Maharashtra secured fourth and fifth place in the three-day event.
Haryana’s clean sweep in discus throw
On the last day of action, Haryana registered a clean sweep in the men’s discus throw F37 event, where talented discus thrower Bhavishay earned a gold medal withy a record throw of 44.27m. He narrowly surpassed his state mate Haney, who earned the silver medal with a throw of 44.13m while Ankit, also from Haryana, secured the third spot after winning a bronze medal.
Meanwhile, in the men’s discus throw F51 event, Haryana’s Dharambir claimed a gold medal with an attempt of 10.91m while Uttar Pradesh’s Ram Ratan Singh and Tamil Nadu’s Alexander Mani had to settle for a silver and bronze medals respectively.
In the F62/F64 category of men’s discuss throw, Pradeep Kumar from SSCB bagged gold with a throw of 44.00m, while Rakesh of SSCB won the F42/F43/F44 event with 49.52m effort. Haryana’s Devender Kumar claimed silver with 49.01m, followed by Shubham Dhull’s bronze who produced 46.23m effort. Meanwhile, in the women’s 200m T35/T36/T37 final Priyanka Sharma from Delhi took the gold medal in 38.11 seconds while Karnataka’s Harshita Tater and Chandigarh’s Babanpreet Kaur won silver and bronze medals respectively.
The championship, which enthralled the audience for three days, witnessed the participation from as many as 1476 para-athletes across 30 states and Union Territories. The athletes participated in 155 events.
