New Delhi: Former India captain MS Dhoni recently opened up on texting Virat Kohli after the Team India star left Test captaincy in January 2022. Kohli stepped down as India’s Test captain after he was removed from ODI captaincy. In an interview with his IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Kohlli recalled Dhoni was the only former teammate who got in touch and texted him after he left Test captaincy and was dealing with one of the lowest phases in his career.

Dhoni, who is known for his reserved nature, likes to stay away from the limelight. Many of his teammates have in the past admitted that the former India captain is hard to contact as he rarely picks up his phone. However, Kohli revealed Dhoni was the only one to speak to him after he decided to leave Test captaincy, highlighting the bond between the duo.

“Let me tell you one thing: when I left Test captaincy, I got a message from only one person, with whom I had played previously; that was MS Dhoni. Many people have my number. On TV, people give lots of suggestions; people have a lot to say. But none of the people who had my number sent me a message,” Kohli had said,” Kohli said.

Recently, Dhoni opened up on the incident after being asked about the same by a fan during an event in Mumbai. The former India captain insisted he is not very good at staying in touch with people but said he tries to be available for them when they need him. His response won the hearts of fans on social media as a clip of his answer went viral.

“It’s deja vu. I was asked a similar question in a JioHotsar show; you will see the answer during the IPL. I’m not great when it comes to being in touch with people but yeah, certain times when you someone needs you, you just drop in a message,” Dhoni said in the event.

Kohli stepped down as India’s T20I captain following the team’s poor show in the T20 World Cup 2021. While confirming his decision to step down as T20I captain, Kohli said he would continue leading India in Tests and ODIs. However, he was sacked as ODI captain a couple of months later with Rohit Sharma taking charge. After BCCI’s decision to remove him from ODI’s captaincy, Kohli left Test captaincy during India’s tour of South Africa in 2022.

MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli to face off in IPL 2025

Dhoni and Kohli will reunite with each other when Chennai Super Kings (CSK) take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Dhoni was retained by CSK as an uncapped player for Rs 4 crore having retired from international cricket over five years ago, while Kohli was retained by RCB for Rs 21 crore. The two big names will be looking to make an impact for their respective teams in the blockbuster clash.
