New Delhi: Congress National Spokesperson Shama Mohamed sparked a massive controversy after making derogatory comments about India skipper Rohit Sharma. Shama caused a furore after calling Rohit Sharma “fat for a sportsperson” and the “most unimpressive” captain in India’s history after the country’s Champions Trophy 2025 victory against New Zealand in Dubai on Sunday. Following backlash from Indian cricket fans and pressure from the party leadership, she later deleted the post.
“Rohit Sharma is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And of course, the most unimpressive captain India has ever had!” her now-deleted post read.
But despite the party’s and Shama’s best efforts to damage control, fans slammed the comments on one of the most respected citizens of the country
BCCI hits back at fat-shaming comments on India skipper
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia also gave his reaction to the controversy and hit back at the controversial remarks. In an exclusive interview with India Today, Saikia labelled the shocking comments as baseless and derogatory and urged the nation to rally behind Rohit’s Men In Blue in the Champions Trophy 2025. India have entered the semi-final of the ICC marquee event where they will meet the mighty Australians on Tuesday, March 4.
“These comments are baseless and derogatory. When the team is playing in the Champions Trophy and doing well, this is the time when one needs to support Team India,” Saikia said.
“These comments shouldn’t be passed.”
Meanwhile, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla also spoke to India Today and defended Rohit Sharma’s fitness. He also said that Shama Mohamed’s remarks did not reflect the stance of the Congress party.
“It is her personal views and tweets. The party has nothing to do with it. Rohit is fit and doing well. Our team is doing well under his leadership. He is a great player,” Shukla told India Today.
Rohit’s childhood coach defended Rohit’s legacy
Among those who slammed the controversial remarks was Dinesh Lad, the childhood coach of Rohit Sharma. Lad, in an exclusive interview with Republic TV, defended his student’s legacy and hit back at the “shameless” comments.
“How can you say like that Rohit is very fat and he is not ready to play for International level? Shameless thing they are saying”, a furious Lad told Republic TV.
