Manoj Tiwary issues clarification after attacking ‘hypocrite’ Gautam Gambhir

New Delhi: Former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary has issued a clarification over his recent comments attacking India head coach Gautam Gambhir. Tiwary blamed the media for editing and playing only a particular part of a long interview as he made his stance clear. Tiwary had recently called Gambhir a ‘hypocrite’ over his past comments.

In an interview with News18, the former Bengal skipper who also played under Gambhir for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), said Gambhir never does what he says and has contradicted himself on many occasions. Tiwary also questioned Gambhir’s decision to rope in Morne Morkel and Ryan ten Doeschate in his support staff for Team India.

For the universe, Gambhir has himself said in the past that the Indian team should prioritise only Indian coaches, who can share the same passion as the players. He argued overseas coaches are only looking to earn money in India and are not as passionate as Indian coaches. However, after taking over as India’s head coach last year, Gambhir advocated for the appointments of Morkel and Doeschate in his support staff.

“Gautam Gambhir is a hypocrite. He doesn’t do what he says,” Manoj Tiwary told News18 Bangla.

“What is the use of a bowling coach? Whatever the coach says, he will agree. Morne Morkel came from Lucknow Super Giants. Abhishek Nayar was at Kolkata Knight Riders with Gambhir, and the Indian head coach knows that he will not go against his instructions,” he added.

Manoj Tiwary responds to Aakash Chopra, clarifies his comments on Gambhir

Tiwary’s comments went viral in no time as many agreed with his assessment of the India head coach amid questions over his coaching credentials following India’s disastrous run in Tests. However, former India batter and popular commentator Aakash Chopra criticised Tiwary for joining the criticism bandwagon against Gambhir.

Tiwary decided to respond to Chopra and clarify his stance on his comments on Gambhir in a video shared by him on social media. The former India batter blamed the media for editing his entire interview in a particular manner and highlighting only a specific part of it. However, he insisted he only said what he felt and had no intentions of joining the criticism bandwagon against Gambhir.

“I was at my coaching centre, sitting there after practice. The local media came there to take my interview. We spoke for 20-25 minutes, and you know that when these people [media] take interviews, they go back to the office and edit it – whatever is convenient, what they feel is required will be kept. They will try to keep whatever there is demand for,” Tiwary said in his video.

“There were two things Aakash bhai (Aakash Chopra) said. I am pretty sure that he may not have seen the interview of 20 minutes. And these four-five lines which came out from my interviews, he might have just seen that. I just want to clear this, Aakash bhai.

“I like Aakash, I respect him, (he gives) honest opinion. I feel it is important to clear this up. Aakash bhai said, ‘Manoj behti Ganga mein haath dho raha hai [Manoj is washing his hands in the flowing Ganga],’ (an idiom meaning to go with the tide), after people like Sunil Gavaskar and Sanjay Manjrekar were also criticising Gautam Gambhir. There is no such thing, Aakash bhai. I have no need to wash my hands in the flowing Ganga. The river is close by, and I can wash my hands there any time, but I do not wish to. I had not been following what those people said. I just said what I felt in the interview,” he added.
