New Delhi: Team India skipper Rohit Sharma scripted history during the semi-final clash against Australia in the Champions Trophy 2025 on Tuesday as he set a new world record. Rohit surpassed Chris Gayle to become the batter with most sixes in ICC ODI events. The Indian captain managed only 28 runs off 29 balls against Australia in the all-important clash but managed to go past Gayle.
Heading into the semi-final, Rohit was tied with Gayle with 64 sixes in ICC ODI events and needed just one maximum to create a new world record. He smashed a six against Aussie pacer Nathan Ellis on the second delivery of the 2nd over to move to 65 sixes and break Gayle’s record. The Indian skipper now has 65 sixes in 42 innings in ICC ODI events.
Rohit went past Gayle, who hit 64 sixes in 51 innings in ICC ODI tournaments. The West Indies legend is followed by David Miller in the elite list with the South African hitting 45 sixes in 30 innings.
Most sixes in ICC ODI events:
Rohit Sharma – 65 sixes
Chris Gayle – 64 sixes
David Miller – 45 sixes
Rohit has been one of the most explosive openers in white-ball cricket over the years and has done well for India consistently in the fifty-over format. The Indian skipper was fine form for the Men in Blue in the 2023 ODI World Cup where he provided them with quick starts at the top regularly. Rohit amassed an impressive 597 runs in the tournament to play a key role in helping India reach the final unbeaten.
Rohit Sharma’s dry spell continues
Rohit has endured a rough patch in the Champions Trophy 2025 so far and his dry spell continued in the semi-final against Australia as he failed to convert his start into a big score and was dismissed cheaply on 28. India needed a strong start from Rohit in the tricky 265-run chase but the Indian skipper failed to deliver as he was trapped lbw by left-arm spinner Cooper Connolly, who made his Champions Trophy debut in the game.
Shubman Gill too departed cheaply after scoring 8 off 11 balls as he was dismissed by left-arm pacer Ben Dwarshuis. After losing the opening duo, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer helped India stage a fightback with a 91-run stand for the 3rd wicket.
