Post Champions Trophy success, Rohit Sharma likely to continue as India captain for England tour

New Delhi: Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma is reportedly said to lead the men’s national cricket team during India’s tour of England in June. This has been attributed to his success of leading the team to victory in the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai.

After India missed the spot in the World Test Championship 2023-25 final because of heavy defeats to New Zealand (3-0) and Australia (3-1), there were questions over Rohit’s future in the red-ball format given that he is at the twilight of his career and his form with the bat didn’t do any justification to his place in the team.

Rohit Sharma’s leadership in the Champions Trophy was influential

The speculations intensified after Rohit dropped himself from India’s last Test match against Australia in Sydney, citing lack of form. Even though he mentioned that he wasn’t contemplating retirement from the Whites at that point, there were reports that suggested that the selectors won’t consider him as India was looking on for a transition period.

However, the selectors are impressed with Rohit’s leadership as India won its third Champions Trophy event after 2013 and 2002.

According to a report by The Indian Express, Rohit Sharma is likely to remain the captain of Indian Test side for the five-match Test series scheduled from June 20 to August 4. The 37-year-old has got the backing of the BCCI and the selection panel to continue in the leadership role for the red-ball format.

The Indian men’s team won all five of their matches in the eight-team event, including the drubbing of New Zealand in the final by four wickets. The Men in Blue played all of their matches at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium after the Indian cricket board refused to allow the team to travel to Pakistan, which was the official host of the event.

Rohit won the second ICC title for India in a space of nine months just after guiding the team to the T20 World Cup in June 2024. Both the campaigns involved the team winning all of their matches (nine in T20 WC and five in Champions Trophy).

Rohit Sharma is reported to captain India’s men’s cricket team during their upcoming Test series in England. Despite recent struggles in the Test format and speculation about his future, his successful leadership in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 victory has most likely influenced the decision.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
