New Delhi: For Newcastle, it may have been a start to their glory in English football after spending years failing to capture a title. Rasmus Hojlund scored his first goal in three months but it came on an occasion when Newcastle were staring at their first trophy in 70 years. For the Magpies, not having a trophy in their cabinet this long has made them less of a laughing stock but rather got them compassion from everyone.
Their 2-1 win in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley Stadium has finally given them a trophy for their name in English football and gives them more than the Inter-City Fair Cup. The baton of not capturing a major trophy in the long run like FA Cup, EFL Cup, European championships like UEFA Cup, Champions League, UEFA Conference League and the lot.

In the 2020s era, eight Premier League teams have won a major trophy and none of them are in a a trophy drought. Liverpool have won the League Cup while Manchester City has won four Premier Leagues and Manchester United have won the FA Cup in 2024. West Ham won the Conference League in 2023 ending their 43-year-old trophy drought, Chelsea have won the Champions League in 2021 while Leicester City won against the Blues in the FA Cup in that very year.
Which English club has seen the longest trophy drought?
Arsenal are in a trophy drought though their last win was in the FA Cup in 2020. The team that everyone is looking at for failure of winning any competition is Tottenham Hotspurs who last won League Cup in 2008. It was under Juande Ramos that Spurs last won when they had won 2-1 against Chelsea at Wembley after Jonathan Woodgate managed to score the winner during the extra time.
In terms of the wait the Newcastle fans saw, Spurs’ win was much more recent, just 17 years ago. Spurs have since come close to winning their next title facing three defeats in the League Cup finals of 2009, 2015 and 2021 as well as a Champions League final loss against Liverpool in 2019 and a runners-up finish in the Premier League in the 2016-17 season.
The wait can be ended if they do manage to win the Europa League with their quarter-final game set for April against Eintracht Frankfurt. In context to their European history and their following, the three big teams who have gone trophyless since the 1990s are Aston Villa, Everton and Leeds United.
Villa last won the League Cup in 1996, winning the final 3-0 against Leeds. Everton had won the 1995 FA Cup, managing to win against Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United 1-0. Leeds’ last title was the 1991-92 English league title, which was the last season before the arrival of the Premier League.
English clubs that have never won a trophy
Villa are in the quarter-finals of both the FA Cup and Champions League and could finally win a trophy this season. FA Cup this season could also give chance to Crystal Palace, Brighton and Hove Albion and Fulham to win having reached the final eight of the competition. None of these sides have won any of the major trophies. Palace have been runners-up twice in the 1990 and 2016 seasons of the competition. Brighton in 1983 and Fulham in 1975 have been runners-up in the competition, with Bournemouth never reaching the semi-final season.
They are the four of the 10 teams in the top two divisions who have never won a major trophy. The other six happen to be Brentford, Watford, Bristol City, Millwall, Hull City and Plymouth Argyle.
In the other FA Cup quarter-finals of the season, Nottingham last won a big trophy the 1990 League Cup. Preston North End’s last silverware came before World War 2 when they won the FA Cup final in 1938 against Huddersfield Town. Other clubs include Blackburn Rovers who last won the League Cup in 2002, Sheffield Wednesday won the 1991 League Cup, Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 1980 League Cup, Sunderland 1973 FA Cup and West Bromwich Albion in the 1968 FA Cup.
These six teams though have just made six final appearances between themselves since their last trophy win and have never been runners-up in the top-tier of football either.
The longest drought since winning a major trophy for any club in the two top-flights is with Sheffield United who will next month mark 100 year since they won a single trophy, having taken home the 1925 FA Cup. At Wembley, it was Fred Tunstall who scored the only goal of the game.
With Newcastle now lifting their first trophy after 70 years of heartbreaks, here’s a look at teams with longer trophy droughts and who have a shot at redemption. Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
