Griha Pravesh during Chaitra Navratri 2025: Traditions for a blessed start

Mumbai: Chaitra Navratri, one of the two most significant Navratris in Hinduism, is set to begin on 30 March and will conclude on 6 April in 2025. While there are four Navratris observed annually, Chaitra and Sharadiya Navratri are considered the most important. The nine-day festival is marked by devotion, fasting, and the worship of the nine forms of Goddess Durga. For many, this period is not only spiritually significant but also seen as highly auspicious for starting new ventures, conducting housewarmings (Griha Pravesh), and initiating other important life events.

Devotees across India prepare for Chaitra Navratri with deep religious fervour, performing rituals and observing fasts in honour of the goddess. It is believed that performing a Griha Pravesh during this sacred time brings prosperity and positivity into the home. However, for the housewarming ceremony to yield auspicious results, it must be conducted in line with Vastu and astrological principles.

Follow Traditions and Rituals for a Blessed Griha Pravesh

Those planning to move into a new home during Chaitra Navratri are advised to follow traditional rituals as prescribed by Vastu Shastra and astrology. According to belief, observing these guidelines helps invite peace, prosperity, and positive energy into the household.

One important custom involves decorating the main entrance of the new home with a toran made of Ashoka and mango leaves. Ashoka leaves are symbols of peace and calm, while mango leaves are believed to attract positive vibrations. Placing these leaves at the door is said to bring harmony and abundance to the house.

Kalash Sthapana and Entry Rituals

Establishing a Kalash (sacred pot) is another vital ritual during Griha Pravesh. The Kalash, decorated with vermillion, a Swastik symbol, and mango leaves, is placed either near the main entrance or at the puja space. This sacred vessel is said to invite Goddess Lakshmi into the home and symbolises a divine welcome to all deities, enhancing the flow of positive energy.

It is also recommended that both husband and wife enter the home together during the ceremony. As per tradition, the wife should step in first with her left foot, followed by the husband with his right foot. This act is believed to strengthen love and harmony in the household.

Purifying the New Space

Before the Griha Pravesh, the house should be purified using Ganga Jal (holy water from the Ganges). Sprinkling Ganga Jal is thought to cleanse the home of any lingering negative energies. A havan (sacred fire ritual) should also be performed during the ceremony to further sanctify the space and invoke divine blessings.
