New Delhi: A superlative batting effort was followed by a sensational bowling effort as Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) registered a thrilling last-over win against Mumbai Indians (MI) in an Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter on Friday. In the closely-fought contest, the Super Giants proved to be a better side as their bowlers restricted Mumbai from chasing down a target of 204 after their batters shined.
Suryakumar Yadav’s 43-ball 67, studded with nine boundaries and a six and skipper Hardik Pandya’s unbeaten 16-ball 28-run knock were in vain as Mumbai lost the encounter by 12 runs. With the result, Mumbai have lost all their three away matches this season. Apart from Suryakumar and Hardik, Naman Dhir also shined for Mumbai with 46 runs while Tilak Varma git retired out after scoring quick 25 runs.
Digvesh Singh Rathi was the pick of the bowlers for Lucknow giving away just 21 runs in his 4-over spell and also claiming a wicket. Shardul Thakur, Akash Deep and Avesh Khan, who bowled a calm last over, also claimed a wicket apiece. This was LSG’s second victory in four matches while Mumbai suffered their third loss in as many games.
Batters’ shine for Super Giants
Earlier, Lucknow Super Giants’ openers Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram smashed half-centuries and shared a 76-run stand as the home team scored a competitive 203 for 8 at the Ekana stadium. Marsh scored 60 off just 31 balls, while South Africa’s Markram made a 38-ball 53 to give their side a perfect start in the crucial match.
For MI, who won the toss and elected to bowl, skipper Hardik Pandya took a brilliant five-for (5/36), claiming the wickets of hard-hitter Nicholas Pooran (12), skipper Rishabh Pant (2), Markram, David Miller (27) and Akash Deep (0). Former skipper Rohit Sharma sat out of the contest after being hit on the knee during nets.
