New Delhi: Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) were handed a double blow following their victory against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Friday as skipper Rishabh Pant and spinner Digvesh Rathi were fined for their respective offences. Rathi was fined for a second time this season for his ‘notebook’ celebration in the game, while Pant was fined for his team’s slow over rate.

Rathi did his ‘writing in the notebook’ celebration after dismissing Naman Dhir during Mumbai Indians’ run chase in the game at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. The spinner has been fined 50% of his match fee and handed two demerit points for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. This was the second penalty for Rathi this season as he was earlier fined for a similar offence.

He was fined 25% of his match fee and handed one demerit point after doing his ‘notebook’ celebration to give opener Priyansh Arya a send-off during his side’s clash against Punjab Kings on April 01. Rathi has now earned three demerit points in total this season and will have to remain careful to avoid suspension.

As per the IPL Code of Conduct, four demerit points amount to one suspension point, which will lead to the player getting suspended from one match when the 4 demerit points are completed. The demerit points remain effective on a player’s record for 36 months. This effectively means another demerit point would mean Rathi will have to miss the next match for LSG.

Nonetheless, Rathi enjoyed a terrific outing against Mumbai Indians as he returned with sublime figures of 1/21 off his four overs to help LSG successfully defend the total of 203 runs. On a day when all LSG bowlers conceded at an economy rate of over 10, Rathi gave away only 5.20 runs an over to play a key role in LSG’s win. He was awarded the Player of the Match for his brilliant spell.

LSG skipper Rishabh Pant penalised

Pant was also penalised for LSG maintaining a slow over rate in the match. He was fined Rs 12 lakh, becoming the third captain to have been fined for slow over-rate this season after Mumbai Indians’ Hardik Pandya and Rajasthan Royals’ Riyan Parag. Pant’s poor form with the bat continued as he managed only 2 runs off 6 balls against MI.

Digvesh Rathi, who starred with the ball in Lucknow Super Giants’ win against Mumbai Indians on Friday, was fined by the BCCI for his ‘notebook’ celebration. LSG skipper Rishabh Pant was also penalised in the game.  IPL Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
