New Delhi: It was that Jasprit Bumrah over again, but this time, it wasn’t the pacer’s bowling brilliance that turned the game around for the Mumbai Indians (MI). Three run-outs on three consecutive deliveries in the penultimate over from Bumrah cost Delhi Capitals (DC) the game as they succumbed under pressure to suffer a close 12-run defeat against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Sunday, April 13.

Karun Nair’s terrific knock of 89 runs off just 40 balls went in vain as Delhi Capitals fell short in the 206-run chase in their first game of the season at their primary home ground – the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Nair turned the clock on his IPL debut and showcased glimpses of his Vijay Hazare form with a stellar knock that was laced with 12 fours and 5 sixes.

Sent as an Impact Sub after DC lost opener Jake Fraser McGurk on a duck on the very first ball of their run-chase, Nair played an exceptional knock to put his side back on track. Playing his first IPL game after three years, Nair continued from where he had left in the Vijat Hazare Trophy, where he smashed a whopping 779 runs and an astounding average of 389.5, including five centuries.

Earlier, the Mumbai Indians’ batting line-up fired as a unit to help the visitors post a strong total of 205 runs on the board in 20 overs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Asked to bat first, openers Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton got MI off to a good start with a 47-run stand for the first wicket.

Rohit played some cracking shots en route to his 18 off 12 but failed to convert his start into a big score as he was trapped lbw by Vipraj Nigam in the 5th over. The Hitman’s struggles continued as he was dismissed cheaply once again. Rickelton slammed 41 off 25 balls before getting cleaned up by Kuldeep Yadav, who provided a crucial breakthrough for DC after the Powerplay.
