Menopausal mood swings: Gynae shares tips to deal with physical, hormonal changes

New Delhi: Menopause is a life stage in a woman that usually takes place between the ages of 45 and 55. It signifies the cessation of menstrual cycles and fertility but is so much more than a physical process. Menopause is an expected change that touches physical as well as emotional realms and impacts everyday life in many different ways. Physically, menopause has often been preceded by complaints of hot flashes, night sweats, lassitude, and alteration of skin and hair texture.

In an interaction with News9Live, Dr Shweta Mendiratta, Associate Director-Obstetrics & Gynaecologist, Marengo Asia Hospital, Faridabad, shared tips on how women in menopause can cope with emotional and physical changes.

Menstrual cramps, uterine discomfort, and abdominal distension due to hormonal imbalance, especially decreasing estrogen levels, may also bring on sleep disturbances, arthralgias, and overweight. Though frequent, the degree of these complaints is variable for different individuals. Emotionally, menopause is just as difficult. Mood swings, irritability, anxiety, and even depression are not unusual at this stage. The hormonal changes also influence brain chemistry, making women more sensitive to emotional and stress responses. Also, the psychological effects of aging and role reversal in the family and society can further increase emotional tension.

Dealing with this stage of life is all about being proactive. Staying active, eating properly, and getting a good night’s sleep can relieve many of the symptoms. Activities such as yoga and meditation have also relieved stress and mood swings. In some cases, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may be given under a doctor’s supervision to reduce extreme symptoms.

Emotional support is also important. Having open discussions with family members, friends, or mental health experts can make a big difference. Knowing that menopause is a universal and normal process can alleviate feelings of loneliness and enable women to confront this new chapter in stride. Menopause matters—not merely as a health event, but as a life-changing milestone. Equipped with the correct information, support, and self-care, women can greet this time with strength, resilience, and new purpose.
