New Delhi: Chelsea climbed to the fourth spot on the Premier League points table after beating Everton 1-0 at the Stamford Bridge with the help of a goal from Nicolas Jackson. It was a crucial victory for the Blues as the race for the Champions League places heats up in the Premier League. Chelsea bagged their second win in a row after beating Fulham 2-1 in their last Premier League outing.

Striker Jackson brought an end to a 13-match goalless streak against Everton to seal all three points for Chelsea at the Stamford Bridge. Jackson put Chelsea ahead in the 27th minute with a fine finish from 20 yards off a pass from Enzo Fernandez. It was his first goal in four months for the Blues, marking an end to a long-standing drought.

However, Chelsea couldn’t capitalise on the early lead and close out the game despite being the better side for the most part in the first half. Everton came back strong in the second half and threatened Chelsea’s lead with a couple of exceptional efforts; however, keeper Robert Sanchez kept the Blues’ lead intact with some crucial saves between the sticks.

Chelsea could have capitalised on the good start and killed the game in the first half itself, but some resolute defending from Everton and brilliant saves from keeper Jordan Pickford kept the Blues from doubling their lead. In the second half, Chelsea had several nervy moments, including the tense last few minutes as Everton kept threatening their one-goal lead. But the Blues managed to hold their nerves to secure a crucial victory in the end.

Race for Champions League spots intensifies

Enzo Maresca’s men moved to the fourth spot with the win, however, they might not be able to stay in the top four for too long, as Newcastle United, who dropped to the fifth place, are currently locking horns with Ipswich Town and a win will help them move up to the third spot on the points table. Chelsea are currently fourth with 60 points, one point behind Manchester City, who will take on Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup on Sunday before returning to Premier League action against Wolves on Saturday.

Chelsea will thus sit in the top five till at least Friday, when Nottingham Forest will take on Brentford. Forest are in the 5th spot, tied with Chelsea on 60 points.
