‘I focused only on the ball’: Vaibhav Suryavanshi reflects on his historic century

New Delhi: Rajasthan Royals’ Vaibhav Suryavanshi carved his name into the IPL history books by smashing a whirlwind century against Gujarat Titans. The 14-year-old’s remarkable 38-ball 101 not only stunned the crowd in Jaipur but also made him the youngest-ever centurion in IPL history.

Suryavanshi’s fearless batting lit up the Sawai Mansingh Stadium as he dismantled a world-class bowling lineup featuring the likes of Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Rashid Khan, and Karim Janat. With 11 towering sixes and seven crisp boundaries, he brought up his century in just 35 balls, showcasing a maturity and flair far beyond his years.

Speaking after the match, Suryavanshi revealed his approach with a simple: “I don’t see the name (of the bowler) much, I just see the ball and play.” It was a statement that summed up the teenager’s fearless attitude as he dominated some of the finest bowlers in the game. Not just that, Suryavanshi even became the youngest player ever to receive the Player of the Match award.

Rahul Dravid’s priceless reaction

Even Rajasthan Royals’ head coach Rahul Dravid, recovering from an injury, couldn’t contain his excitement. In the moment of Suryavanshi’s achievement, Dravid forgot about his crutches and stood up, cheering loudly along with the rest of the dugout.

Suryavanshi credited months of hard work behind the scenes for his success. “It is a very good feeling. It’s my first 100 in the IPL and in just my third innings. I have been practising for the last three-four months, and the results are showing now,” he said with a shy smile.

The youngster stitched a dominant 166-run partnership inside 12 overs with Yashasvi Jaiswal, who remained unbeaten on 70. Jaiswal was all praise for the teenager, calling his knock “one of the best” he had ever witnessed. “He practises hard, plays amazing shots, and has the right temperament. I hope he continues to do this for us,” Jaiswal said.

Even Gujarat Titans’ captain Shubman Gill, who himself scored a fluent 84, acknowledged that it was simply Suryavanshi’s night. “His hitting was tremendous, and he took the game away from us early,” he admitted.

A star is born

Suryavanshi’s breathtaking innings is not just a personal milestone, rather, it signals the arrival of a young talent who could dominate cricket’s biggest stage for years to come.
