New Delhi: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spin bowler Varun Chakravarthy has been struck with a fine of 25% of his match fee and handed one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during his team’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Kolkata on Wednesday. The already eliminated CSK side dented KKR’s hopes of making it to the top four for the playoffs, claiming victory by two wickets.

“Varun Chakaravarthy admitted to the Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” the IPL statement read, without specifying the incident.

For the uninitiated, Article 2.5 pertains to any “language, action or gesture used by a player and directed towards a batter upon his dismissal, which has the potential to provoke an aggressive reaction from the dismissed batter”. After dismissing half-centurion Dewald Brevis in the run chase as his second wicket, Varun had given him a send-off, gesturing to him to leave the field.

100 IPL wickets for Chakravarthy

Brevis scored 52 runs off 25 balls as his half-century played a crucial role in CSK winning the contest. His wicket did bring KKR back into the game, but despite Varun’s 2/18, they failed to defend 179. Brevis’ wicket delivered Varun a momentous feat of reaching 100 wickets in the IPL. His ascension in the IPL and for Team India has been phenomenal.

Talking about KKR, they are now sixth on the points table with 11 points from 12 games, and it is now highly unlikely that they will qualify for the playoffs. KKR will play their remaining two league matches, against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on May 10 and against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on May 17. Both are away-from-home fixtures, and a win in those is necessary for the Kolkata-based franchise to keep any remaining possibility alive.

Varun Chakravarthy was slapped with a heavy fine under Article 2.5 of the IPL Code of Conduct, post his two-wicket spell in the KKR vs CSK IPL 2025 clash on Wednesday.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
