After retiring from Tests, what is Rohit Sharma’s one final dream? His childhood coach reveals…

New Delhi: Team India stalwart Rohit Sharma has quietly bid adieu to Test cricket, but his childhood coach Dinesh Lad feels his story in Indian cricket is far from over. While announcing the news, the batting ace also confirmed he would continue to lead India in the ODIs, and as it seems, this could be the final chapter of his glittering career.

And to adorn it, Rohit is completely focused on the 50-over format to bring glory to the country in the 2027 ODI World Cup, Lad has said after Rohit’s Test retirement. The 38-year-old recently added the Champions Trophy to his cabinet, besides the elite T20 World Cup title, which India won under his leadership last year, as the veteran turned out to be one of the most successful skippers the nation has ever had.

Lad, who trained Rohit during his early cricketing days, believes Rohit would like to bow out from cricket on a high, by winning the ODI World Cup, which India have been missing since 2011 when the MS Dhoni-led side lifted the trophy. “His (Rohit’s) aim is to win the 2027 ODI World Cup and then retire,” Lad told PTI Videos on Wednesday.

“His target was the World Test Championship, but unfortunately, we didn’t qualify. Now, it’s the 2027 World Cup… I also want him to win the 2027 World Cup and then retire,” Lad added. The quadrennial event will next take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in October and November.

Talking about Rohit’s ongoing ODI career, he has already amassed 11,168 runs, which includes 32 hundreds and three double-hundreds, including his famous highest score of 264. This makes him one of the most dangerous ODI batters in the international circuit.
