Babar Azam on cusp of breaking Hashim Amla’s world record in final South Africa ODI

New Delhi: Babar Azam’s lean patch finally came to an end during the second ODI match against South Africa as the veteran batter smashed a powerful fifty to announce his return in style. Azam, who had experienced a string of failures in the recent time across all the formats, hit 73 runs off 95 deliveries to set the perfect base for Pakistan in the first innings.

By virtue of Azam and Mohammad Rizwan’s 80-run knock, Pakistan registered a massive 81-run victory in the encounter, sealing the 3-match series 2-0, with a game to still take place. While Azam and Rizwan did the bulk of the scoring for Pakistan in the high-scoring encounter, Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah displayed remarkable skills with the ball claiming 4 and 3 wickets respectively to destroy the Proteas innings.

In the third and final ODI against the Proteas on Sunday, the star Pakistan batter is on the cusp of breaking a world record in the 50-over format. Azam is just 95 runs short of becoming the fastest batter to score 6000 runs or more in the ODI format in terms of innings taken. The Pakistani is on the verge of breaking South Africa great Hashim Amla’s record of scoring 6000 runs milestone in just 123 innings.

Babar has player 119 ODI innings so far and has three innings left to break the world record achieved by the veteran proteas player. Virat Kohli is on the second spot in the list as he has reached the milestone in 136 ODI innings. Kane Williamson and David Warner occupy the third and fourth spot in the list with the milestone achieved in 139 innings. Babar is on the cusp of registering another record in the 50-over format. With 19 centuries to his name till date, the tall batter is just a century away from joining Saeed Anwer as the country’s highest centurion in ODIs.
