New Delhi: Indian skipper Rohit Sharma dropped a bomb on Wednesday evening after he announced his decision to retire from the longest format of the game. Rohit’s sudden announcement came as a shock for all across the cricketing fraternity and fans as he was expected to continue leading Team India on the tour to England next month where both the teams play five Test matches.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was on the cusp of finalising the squad for the England tour as Rohit decided to quit the format, as per reports. According to a report in Cricbuzz, Rohit shocked the Indian cricket board by dropping an email just before making his retirement decision public. The report mentions that in the suspense email, the Indian skipper made his stance clear on his red-ball future.

BCCI search for new skipper

As the Mumbai batter took to social media to announce his decision, chief selector Ajit Agarkar was seen on a phone call at the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai which lasted for quit some time. However, it has not been established yet that whether Agarkar was speaking to Rohit or any other member of the Indian cricket board.

The report also mentions that the BCCI selection committee wasn’t keen on continuing with Rohit as the red-ball skipper and they were already in search for a new captain. Meanwhile, as soon as Rohit made his decision public, tributes started to pour in from all quarters. Members of the cricketing fraternity, fans, IPL franchises, ICC among other were the ones to thank Rohit for his contribution in whites for Team India.

While Rohit did not have such an illustrious career in Tests as ODIs and T20Is yet made some impact with his performances and captaincy skills. Having already retired from the T20Is last year, Rohit will now be seen in ODIs and the IPL.
