BCCI won’t convince Virat Kohli to stay, won’t interfere if he wants to retire from Test cricket – Report

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly not trying to convince Virat Kohli to stay back and will not interfere if the senior batter wants to retire from Test cricket. Multiple reports have claimed that Kohli has reportedly decided to hang up his boots from Test cricket, but the BCCI is trying to convince him to reconsider his decision.

However, a fresh report in Dainik Jagran has debunked the claim that the BCCI is trying to stop Kohli from quitting Tests. The report claims that BCCI has never tried to convince anyone to reconsider their retirement decisions and won’t interfere in Kohli’s case. The board believes retirement is the personal call of any player.

“BCCI convinces nobody. A player’s decision is personal and the board doesn’t like to intervene in those decisions,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by Dainik Jagran.

The report also stated that the decision to remove Rohit Sharma as the captain of the Indian Test team was taken after India suffered a 3-1 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia. The loss against Australia was India’s second consecutive Test series defeat for India after their humiliating 0-3 whitewash against New Zealand at home.

Rohit was informed about the board and the team management’s decision to sack him as captain during a meeting on May 07, following which the senior batter announced his retirement from Test cricket with an Instagram post. As per the report, Kohli has also been similarly told that his services might not be required in Test cricket going forward, and it remains to be seen how the senior batter responds.

“Hopefully not,” BCCI source on whether Kohli will travel to England

As per the report, Kohli might not be part of the Indian squad for the upcoming tour of England. A BCCI source said, “hopefully not”, when asked if he thinks the senior batter will be on the flight to England with the rest of the Indian squad next month. India are scheduled to play five Tests against England starting June 20.

Virat Kohli has reportedly been hinted by the BCCI and the Indian team management that he is not in the team’s plans ahead of the Test series against England. A BCCI source also clarified that the board is not trying to convince Kohli to not retire from the longest format.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
