New Delhi: Newcastle United moved into third place in the Premier League after edging past 10-man Chelsea in a tense battle at St James’ Park. Sandro Tonali’s goal in the opening two minutes proved the key difference, but this clash had far more twists than the scoreline suggests.
The Magpies gave it all and wasted no time in landing a heavy blow to the Blues. Just 1 minute and 52 seconds in the game and the Italian striker took the spotlight as he edged past Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, making it Newcastle’s fastest ever Premier League goal against Chelsea.
The Blues failed to recover from the early blow and couldn’t find the rhythm with their attacking line, even lacking the spark. Things went from bad to worse for Chelsea as Nicolas Jackson was sent off in the 36th minute, as he was initially booked for a clumsy aerial challenge on Sven Botman. The referee wasted no time and upgraded the yellow card to red after a VAR review, which showed Jackson had clearly led with his forearm. Forward’s exit left the Blues with a mountain to climb.

Chelsea show fight, but Guimaraes seals it
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Chelsea came out with renewed intent in the second half. Reece James had a golden chance to equalise with a header while Nick Pope was called into action twice with smart saves to deny the visitors.
Though Newcastle had more shots overall, 11 in total with five on target, but they weren’t quite as clinical as they’d have liked. But just as Chelsea looked to have gained some momentum, Bruno Guimaraes stepped up in the 90th minute. His effort from the edge of the box took a deflection and left Sanchez wrong-footed, sealing the result for the hosts.
It was a gritty win for the Magpies as it clearly demonstrated their determination to qualify for the Champions League spot. Despite the loss, Chelsea can take positives from the second half efforts and bounce back in the remaining fixtures against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest remaining as their European hopes are still very much alive.
