Wimbledon 2024: Indian contingent, players to watch out for at the biggest Grand Slam of the year

New Delhi: The oldest and biggest Grand Slam ‘Wimbledon 2024’ kicks off on July 1, Monday. It will be a grass court tournament where a 128 players will draw for singles in both men’s and women’s events. This will be the 137th edition of the Wimbledon championship. All matches will be played in London, United Kingdom.

Indian contingent in Wimbledon 2024

Indian Tennis star Sumit Nagal will be playing at Wimbledon 2024 and is the only player to represent India in men’s singles category. Nagal will begin his campaign against Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic on July 1. Four Indians will be representing India at the Wimbledon Championship 2024 – Sumit Nagal, Rohan Bopanna, N.Sriram Balaji and Yuki Bhambri.

Bopanna will partner alongside Australia’s Matthew Ebden in the men’s doubles, they are the semi-finalists in the previous edition. Balaji will partner England’s Luke Johnson and Bhambri will play with Albano Olivetti. There will be three teams in men’s doubles that will represent India. There will be no Indian in women’s singles or doubles events.

World no. 3 Carlos Alcaraz is the defending champion of the grass-court Grand Slam. The Spanish sensation recently won the second Grand Slam of the year, ‘French Open’ and will be a favourite to win back-to-back Grand Slam titles. Meanwhile, World no.6 Marketa Vondrousova will enter as the defending champion in women’s singles.

Players to watch out for in men’s Wimbledon Championship 2024

1. Carlos Alcaraz- He will be defending his title coming after winning the clay-court championship and also eyeing to win back-to-back Grand Slams.

2. Jannik Sinner- World no. 1 Sinner won the first Grand Slam of the year ‘Australian Open’ and is currently in tremendous form.

3. Novak Djokovic- Former World no.1 Djokovic was the finalist in the previous edition but now he is coming from a knee injury in the tournament. Previously, he had withdrawn from the French Open 2024 quarter-finals.

4. Jack Draper- The local boy Draper recently won against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in grass-court ATP London event and will get home support from the crowd.
