New Delhi: Stalwarts of the Indian cricket team Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli shocked the entire cricketing fraternity when they bid adieu to the longest format of the game in the last week. Both Kohli and Rohit had announced their retirement from the T20 format last year together after India cliched the 2024 T20 WC title and in a similar fashion, both bid adieu to Tests in the last week.
While both the player were expected to be a part of India’s squad for England’s Test tour in June, maybe for the last time in their careers but they called it quits even before the commencement of the series. With the duo out of the T20s and Tests, the only format in which they will be seen donning the India jersey is the ODIs.
While Kohli has expressed his desire to play the ODI World Cup in 2027, Rohit has too given his nod to lead India at the showpiece event. With the entire world wishing to see both the veterans in the marquee event, veteran Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar doesn’t feel that the duo will play the 2027 ODI World Cup. According to a report in Sport Today, Gavaskar said that their plans for the ODI World Cup depend on the selectors’ perception of their game.
‘They have been massive performers in this format of the game. Again, the selection committee will probably be looking at the 2027 World Cup. They will be looking at whether they will be able to be in the team for the 2027 World Cup? Will they be able to make the kind of contributions they have been making? That will be the thought process of the selection committee. If the selection committee thinks ‘yes, they can’, then both of them will be there for that,’ Gavaskar told.
When the Indian legend was asked to tell his opinion, he was blunt in providing verdict saying that he does not think that either of the two would be in Team India’s ODI squad for the 2027 World Cup.
‘No, I don’t think they will be playing. I am being very honest. But, who knows, in the next year or so, if they strike a rich vein of form, and if they keep scoring hundreds and hundreds, even God can’t drop them,’ Gavaskar added.
