New Delhi: FC Barcelona notched up their 28th La Liga title as teenage star Lamine Yamal yet again claimed the spotlight with a stunning goal and an assist, registering a 2-0 win over Espanyol in a derby clash at the RCDE Stadium in Barcelona on Thursday. The 17-year-old winger curled a fantastic strike into the top left corner of the net from the edge of the box to confirm his team as champions of the 2024-25 season.
He made a pass to Fermin Lopez, who converted it for a second goal, deep into the injury time. The Catalonian team has two more games left and is holding an unassailable lead of seven points over second-placed Real Madrid. Only in his first season as Barcelona head coach, Hansi Flick has managed a complete sweep of domestic titles, including the Copa del Rey, Spanish Super Cup, and now the top-flight La Liga.
Speaking of their clashes against arch-rivals Real Madrid, the Barça side won all four of their Clásico meetings this season, including the domestic cup finals. “We’ve always thought positively, and we could feel it looking at training sessions. At Barça, you have to win titles, and three titles is just great,” Flick spoke to Movistar Plus.

The game saw a bit of a pause in the first half as horrifying news emerged from outside the stadium. A car had driven into the fans, leaving 13 injured, and four of them were rushed to the hospital, but none of them were critical. Play restarted soon, and Barca drilled in the opener in the 53rd minute with an assist from Dani Olmo. This was Yamal’s 17th goal of the season overall, and an eighth in La Liga.
Espanyol’s defender Leandro Cabrera was sent off the field with 10 minutes remaining, as he lashed out with his arm to strike Yamal as the two vied for the ball. But it didn’t stop Yamal from rising again as he made a clinical assist for Lopez’s deflected finish that sealed victory for Barca.
