Ruben Amorim braces for soaring United expectations if Sporting sink Guardiola’s City

New Delhi: Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim was announced as Erik Ten Hag’s successor at Manchester United following his departure from the club after a poor start to the season. Under Ten Hag’s reign, the Red Devils had won only four matches from a total of 14 in all competitions before his sacking.

The expectations from Amorim are sky-high as United looks to make a comeback and return to its old top position back in the Premier League within a few years. But before the 39-year-old takes over his role at Old Trafford he has two more games left as Sporting head coach including the Champions League encounter against his new team’s arch rivals.

The New Manchester United manager addressed that if his team manages to beat Manchester City then the United fans will think “the new Alex Ferguson has arrived” which is very difficult to live up to and if the result turns out to be negative expectations will drop and he doesn’t think that as a bad starting point to begin as Manchester United boss.

Fergusen have won 38 trophies during his 26-year tenure as Man United boss before retiring in 2013. He is even set to leave his role as club ambassador at the end of the season. Sporting have won 14 of their last 15 games in all competitions, having lost the Portuguese Super Cup this season. Amorim shared on his social media that Sir Alex Ferguson is an inspiration to him.

Both Sporting and City are on the seven points from three games so far. Pep Guardiola’s Man City beat Sporting 5-0 back in 2022 in the last 16 of the competition and will try to win all three points this time. Talking about the same Amorim said, “I feel like I’m a better coach [now] but unfortunately what I feel is that Pep Guardiola has also become an even better coach, so the gap remains.” He even mentions that City have the best team and the best coach in the world.

Amorim on his home farewell

As Man City’s visit to the Estádio José Alvalade marks Ruben Amorim’s last match in front of Sporting home fans, he said, “I will be able to control my emotions. It is important to win. If so it helps me to leave with more joy. There were many games here, some very remarkable moments, some very difficult. But it will be my last in Alvalade and it will be special.”

Amorium has changed the playing paradigm of Sporting which helped them become the best team in Portugal by far. He helped them win the Taca da Liga (Portugal League Cup) twice and Supertaca Candido de Oliveira in 2021. Amorim also holds an impressive record as Sporting’s coach in the Primeira Liga, having won 120 out of his 156 games.
