New Delhi: Carlos Alcaraz defeated World No. 1 Jannik Sinner in straight sets in the final to lift in the Internazionali BNL d’Italia (Italian Open) in Rome on Sunday. The Spaniard won 7-6 (5), 6-1 for his first title in Rome that enabled him to complete his set of ATP Masters 1000 titles.

Alacaraz’s win also snapped Italian Sinner’s 26-match winning across surfaces. The World No.1 was bidding to win the home title but after a hard-gought first set that he lost in the tie-breaker, he lost his his way in the second set.

Alcaraz now has won 11 ‘big titles’, a combination of Grand Slam championships, trophies at the ATP Finals and ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, and Olympic singles gold medals.

He also won the Monte-Carlo title last month to capture multiple ‘big titles’ in four consecutive seasons.

Seventh ATP masters 1000 titles

It was the 22-year-old Alcaraz’s seventh ATP Masters 1000 titles, winning at each of the season’s first five Masters 1000 events at least once in his career.

He is now level for the eighth-most crowns in ATP series history since 1990 with Michael Chang and Alexander Zverev. In championship matches, Alcaraz improved to a 11-2 record, with his two defeats against record 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic.

On clay courts, Alcaraz improved to 7-1 against top-10 opponents and 3-1 against World No. 1 ranked players, including two against Sinner, who was bidding to become only the second Italian to win the Rome title this weekend after World No. 6 Jasmine Paolini beat No. 4 Coco Gauff, 6-4, 6-2, in the womnen’s final.

In the first set, Alcaraz had to saving a couple of set points. But once he did that he became more confident and won the tiebreaker with a forehand volley into the open court.

Sinner had his moments to break in the first game of the second set, but Alcaraz held on and then pressed home his advantage as he broe to take a 2-0 lead and then never allowed a way back for the local player.

Alcaraz lost two match points while serving at 5-1, 40-15, but ensured to complete the win on his third with a forehand shot.
