New Delhi: Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill played dazzling knocks as Gujarat Titans (GT) became the first team to qualify for the playoffs in the Indian Premeir League (IPL) 2025 after registering a dominant 10-wicket win against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday. Sudharsan slammed an unbeaten ton while Gill missed out on his by a whisker as the duo propelled GT to a thumping victory.

Gill and Sudharsan aced the 200-run chase against DC with an unbeaten 205-run opening stand as the duo continued their purple patch in the tournament. Sudharsan was the aggressor in his stroke-filled 108 not out off just 65 balls, while Gill played the perfect second-fiddle with a sublime knock of 93 runs off 53 balls.

The duo scripted history with their 205-run partnership as GT became the first team to chase down a 200-run target without losing a wicket in the IPL. Gill and Sudharsan also dwarfed KL Rahul’s stellar batting effort with their brilliant opening partnership. Rahul had smashed an unbeaten 112 for DC to power them to a strong total, but his ton went in vain.

There was no looking back for Gill and Sudharsan after they got off to a flying start in the 20-run chase with a magnificent display in the Powerplay. Continuing their incredibly consistent run, the duo looked nearly unstoppable as they chased down the target of 200 runs with remarkable ease. Sudharsan’s 108 was laced with 12 fours and 4 sixes, while Gill smashed 7 sixes and 3 fours en route to his 93 not out.

2nd-highest opening stand in IPL

Gill and Sudharsan’s 205-run stand is the second-highest opening stand in IPL history and the highest in a successful chase. The GT openers also hold the record for the highest opening stand in IPL history for their 210-run partnership against Chennai Super Kings last season. Gill and Sudharsan’s magnificent stand sealed GT’s spot in the playoffs.

Earlier, Rahul starred with the bat for Delhi Capitals after they were asked to bat first in the game. Rahul scored an unbeaten 112 off 65 balls, studded with 14 fours and 4 sixes to power DC to 199 runs in 20 overs. However, the total didn’t prove enough in front of the brilliance of the GT openers, who made light work of the chase.

GT, RCB and Punjab Kings qualify for playoffs

While Gujarat Titans became the first team to qualify for the playoffs after beating Delhi Capitals, their victory also confirmed Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS)’ entry into the playoffs this season. GT bagged their 9th win of the season to remain on top of the points table with 18 points after 12 matches.

Meanwhile, both RCB and PBKS qualified with 17 points each. While DC are still in contention to secure the final fourth spot in the playoffs, they are expected to face intense competition from Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants, who are also alive in the race for the top four.

DC are currently fifth on the table with 13 points after 12 matches, while Mumbai Indians are in the 4th spot with 14 points from 12 matches. LSG are currently seventh with 10 points after 11 matches. DC have their fate in their own hands as two wins in their next two matches will seal their berth in the playoffs.
