New Delhi: To prevent getting injured that could harm his future prospects, Kevin De Bruyne may excuse himself from the Club World Cup, having already decided to leave Manchester City after the end of the ongoing season.

De Bruyne will leave City after 14 major trohies in a 10-year stint after not receiving offer for a new deal. Since he is weighing his options, he has cast doubts about playing in the Club World Cup in June and July after reports of signing a short-term extension with City surfaced.

“I think in a way I have to take care of myself because if I get injured in the Club World Cup, what am I going to do?” De Bruyne said, as quoted by the Associated Press.

“Nobody’s going to take care of me at that point. So there’s a big chance probably I won’t play it, but I don’t know, maybe yes.”

The 33-year-old said there is not clarity over whether City are keen to have him for the Club World Cup that will be held in the United States.

“I have to take care of my family. I’ve got three kids, my wife, it’s not an easy process at this time,” he said.

FIFA has introduced a short-term transfer window to allow players, whose contracts end on June 30, to move to new clubs to participate in the tournament that has been expanded from seven to 32 teams.

De Bruyne has the option of utilising the window to sign a short-term deal to play before moving on as free agents. But the risk of getting injured before a permanent move may dissuade the Belgian from participating, even at the prospect of leaving City without a trophy this season.

“This year has just not gone the way we wanted it to. You have to accept it. You have to move on and work hard and go again,” De Bruyne said.

“It’s alright. This doesn’t change anything that’s happened in the past 10 years.” De Bruyne said he has yet to decide on his next move would and whether he would look to join another Premier League team.”
