IPL 2025 playoffs: What happens if rain abandons crucial clash between MI and DC at Wankhede?

New Delhi: With Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Punjab Kings already through to the IPL 2025 playoffs, the fight remains between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals for the fourth spot. The Capitals are on the brink of elimination from the 18th edition of the league and if they wish to survive and go ahead, they need to win both their remaining matches.

However, with rain expected to play spoilsport in Delhi’s next match against Mumbai on Wednesday, it happens to be a potential blow to the franchise. As per AccuWeather, a yellow alert has been issued in the financial capital of India for next four days. The report suggests that there is a 80 percent chance of precipitation in the city, with nearly 1.5 hours of rain expected in total. The rain probability reduces during the night.

What happens if the clash is washed out?

In case rain acts as the spoilsport and washes out the entire clash, qualification chances for the Mumbai Indian will boost as they are already ahead of the Capitals by a point. In case the clash gets abandoned due to rain, both teams would earn a point each and in this situation, Mumbai’s tally go up to 15 points while Delhi’s would increase to 14.

Both the franchises play their last league games of the season against already-qualified Punjab side and if today’s clash between MI and DC does not give a result, the Capitals will need to keep an eye on the contest between PBKS and MI, which will decide their fate. If MI defeat PBKS in that match, Delhi would be knocked out from the playoffs race, no matter the result of the match between them and Punjab.

The only way Delhi finish in the top four in case of a washed-out match against Mumbai is if the Hardik Pandya-led team loses its final match of the season against the Kings.
