New Delhi: Seasoned Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth showcased his class to storm into the quarterfinals of the ongoing Malaysia Masters tournament in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday. Srikanth registered a thumping win over Irish opponent Nhat Nguyen in his second round encounter to advance in the tournament.

The ace Indian shuttler prevailed 23-21, 21-17 in the contest against world number 33 Nguyen with the match lasting for 59 minutes. Srikanth, whose world ranking has gone down to 65 due to a long period of lean patch, is set to face Toma Junior Popov of France in the last-eight stage of the badminton event in Malaysian capital.

Meanwhile, Popov, who would be up against an Indian opponent, ousted another Indian, Ayush Shetty, with a 21-13, 21-17 triumph in his second round match. Shetty, whom performed well in the opening round clash to advance ahead, could not sustain the challenge of the French shuttler.

In another disappointment for India’s campaign, Sathish Karunakaran, who had showcased his class in his first round encounter, bowed out of the event after suffering a 14-21, 16-21 loss against Toma’s brother and doubles partner Christo Popov.

In the doubles competition on the other hand, Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila advanced to the quarterfinals of the mixed event with a 21-17, 18-21, 21-15 win over France’s Lea Palermo and Julien Maio. They will next face the Chinese combination of Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin.
