New Delhi: Nigel Pearson, the former manager of Leicester City and Watford, has opened up about his battle with a “neurological situation” that left him facing the daunting task of learning to walk again. The 61-year-old shared an inspiring update on social media, expressing gratitude for the support he has received over the past year. He was most recently the manager of Championship club Bristol City and was seen using crutches towards the end of his career there.
Pearson first disclosed his health struggles in October 2023, shortly before being sacked as Bristol City manager. At the time, he revealed he was awaiting further tests to determine the full extent of his condition. Now, 13 months later, he has offered insight into his journey, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and positivity in overcoming adversity. “Learning to walk again has been an incredible challenge,” Pearson wrote. “My appreciation of support from family, friends, colleagues, supporters, and medical professionals has been profound.”

Pearson also reflected on moments of joy that have helped him through his recovery. He recounted a trip to the United States with his father to meet family in Wisconsin and spoke of recent milestones like cycling in the Peak District and practicing his golf swing. Despite uncertainties about his prognosis, he remains optimistic, emphasizing that “positivity and laughter can prove the best medicine.”
Pearson’s resilience is a hallmark of his life and career. His first managerial role at Carlisle United is etched into football history. In the 1998-99 season, Pearson’s side famously avoided relegation from the Football League thanks to an injury-time goal from goalkeeper Jimmy Glass on the final day. Incredibly enough, that isn’t the only famous relegation escape that Pearson has overseen.

Nigel Pearson managed Leicester City in two spells, with his second stint cementing his legacy at the club. In 2014, he guided the Foxes to promotion to the Premier League. The following season, Leicester found themselves bottom of the table at Christmas, seemingly destined for relegation. However, Pearson orchestrated a miraculous turnaround, with his team securing seven wins and a draw in their final nine games to retain their top-flight status.
This achievement laid the groundwork for Leicester’s historic Premier League title win the following year under Claudio Ranieri. While Pearson left the club before the historic 2015/16 season even began, the impact of his tenure can’t be overlooked. He guided the club to an incredible escape in the 2014/15 season as he took them from a relegation battle to a highly respectable 14th placed finish in the league. While he may not have won the title for them, there wouldn’t have been a title without his ‘great escape’.
While Pearson has faced challenges off the pitch, his fighting spirit remains unwavering. As he continues his recovery, he draws strength from his experiences and the people around him. “There is always light somewhere ahead – new possibilities, new challenges,” he said, embodying the determination that has defined his life in football. Pearson’s story is a reminder that resilience can triumph over adversity, both on and off the field.
