New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday announced Team India’s squad for the upcoming five-Test series against England beginning June 20 in Headingley. The highly anticipated development was headlined by Shubman Gill being appointed as the new skipper of the Indian Test team and Rishabh Pant getting the role of his deputy for the crucial England tour.
However, when chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar was addressing the media at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai shortly after the selection meeting, it was indeed shocking when he informed that pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is unlikely to feature in all five Tests in England. He reasoned this to workload management, which was also a factor in him not being given the captaincy role, but he was named in the squad, nonetheless.

“Bumrah was the vice-captain in Australia, but since he was not available for all five (Tests then), we wanted him fit. We’d rather have him bowling as well as he does than put an extra burden on him. We had a chat with him and he’s okay with it. It was to do with his workload management and about having him fit as a player,” Agarkar said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Bumrah had previously assumed the role of India’s vice captain in their recent tour to Australia, but Agarkar at the presser said that the physiotherapists have advised against Bumrah participating in the five-Test series.
